Reviews and Info on John Lewis

The John Lewis Partnership is a visionary and successful way of doing business, boldly putting the happiness of Partners at the centre of everything it does. It's the embodiment of an ideal, the outcome of nearly a century of endeavour to create a different sort of company, owned by Partners dedicated to serving customers with flair and fairness.

Introduction to John Lewis

When our founder, John Spedan Lewis, set up the Partnership, he was careful to create a governance system, set out in our Constitution, that would be both commercial allowing us to move quickly to stay ahead in a competitive industry, and democratic giving every Partner a voice in the business they co-own. His combination of commercial acumen and corporate conscience, so ahead of its time, is what makes us what we are today.

The John Lewis Partnership won 'Retailer of the Year' at the Oracle Retail Week Awards 2011. The judges highlighted initiatives including John Lewis's multi-channel operation and its 'at home' format, as well as Waitrose's convenience shops and new partnerships with retailers such as Boots.

Never Knowingly Undersold is our lifelong commitment to giving you the best value through great products, at great prices, supported by great service.

We know price is really important, and that´s why we put so much effort into getting it right. We check and match the online and shop prices of our high street competitors, and when we match a national price, this applies in all our shops and on our website. We even match competitors’ sale prices. For John Lewis own brand products, our buyers are charged with making sure we offer the best quality for the price in the market.

After once thinking John Lewis had a good reputation for customer service it seems this is no longer the case. There have been problems with the last two items purchased from the store and the srvice has been at best terrible and at worst none existant. The latest was a bed purchased as solid wood but failed along very poor quality joins after only sitting on it (the bed hardly used as in the spare room). Out of warrenty and JL don't want to know. Thanks but no thanks

This is some feedback for you about my very poor experience of using Johnlewis.com I ordered an Android tablet from you on the 13th Jan, after checking that it was in-stock on the website. My card was debited and I was informed by email and on the website that the product had been dispatched. On the 20/1/2012 I chased customer services to find out why it had not been delivered, and was told that it was not in stock, and was supplied by a third party vendor. The vendor was out of stock,..

We recently purchased a Tudor mirror from John Lewis after a disastrous experience with Laura Ashley. I am happy to say that the service we received from the store at Bluewater was excellent, as was all communication pertaining to the delivery. The mirror arrived within a few days, in perfect condition and we are delighted with it.
Thanks John Lewis for restoring our faith in customer service!

    [ REF JL-032181750 .]

IT IS HARDLY SUPRISING THAT JOHN LEWIS HAD AN EXCELLENT TRADING RESULT FOR DECEMBER WITH THE SERVICE I WAS OFFFERED !

I was in Bourenmouth on Christmas Holiday . I desperateley needed a new Paella Pan as my old one [ not John Lewis , had met it's Waterloo !!! ]
I went into the John Lewis \" Home Store \" situated mid Poole / Bourenmouth , where despite the Sale [ which was in FULL swing ] one of the extremeley \" efficient \" and \" very helpfull \" Assistants , not only spent the time with me in locating a store where they still had some Paella Pans in stock BUT gave me the product code [ 81303803 ]/ price [ £49.00 ]and a list of 3 stores in the Country where I could ring and purchase the product once I got home , as indeed their \" on line \" stock was also exhausted . WELL DONE .

On returning home I telephoned John Lewis in Oxford Street who took my details AND rang back when they said they would [ a refreshing change in today's market ] took all my details and arranged Home Delivery , which because the product was in excess of £30 was FREE DELIVERY ....[ AND I LIVE IN CORNWALL ] , ADDED BONUS , as a Paella Pan is not a light item ...
3 Day's later it arrived , very well packed with a letter \" thanking \" me for my purchase .

Saturday Night I am hosting one of my \" infamous \" Soirres , and guess what's for the Main Cou

Service and customer care was Poor, very poor. Only one item received - and that differed from website description - and was delivered late! The other item proved to be unavailable, but no communication from John Lewis saying this until non-delivery of item queried! Plus John Lewis even took three days to answer that query, and then only with a limp apology stating that the item was unavailable because it had been 'returned to supplier'? Items ordered as presents, so lateness of delivery and communication (after 10 days, and then only after query) from John Lewis stating order was unavailable left no time to arrange replacements from elsewhere. When queried, only a single line response with a stock apology and made up reason. Poor service and poor customer care, extected better from John Lewis, have a regular shopper at John Lewis for over thirty years, but will give web site store a wide berth from now on!

Placed an order of a Miele T7644C Condenser Tumble Dryer as stated 10 were in stock, upon ordering I chose a delivery slot (this friday) and then got confirmation email through.

Upon reading confirmation email delivery was changed to nearly 3 weeks time, Due to birth of baby I then rang & questioned this as I had only ordered as delivery could be allocated to suit myself.

No apologies at all & John Lewis took the funds from my account even though it clearly states on their site they do not take funds until item is dispatched.

Very disappointed & will be the last time I ever order from John Lewis, Customer services were useless & said even the new delivery date was a 'maybe' so cancelled the order straight away

We bought this item On line - the delivery service was ok although a 2-9pm time slot was not very convenient!
    However , Returns service rubbish!!!
When we opened the package, which was a DVD unit,( described as oak solids and veneers) we realised that it did not match the description and it was much cheaper looking than ikea Billy! There was no solid oak and the veneered sides were finished with a paper faced back edge.
Phoned customer services within 15 minutes of delivery and was told they would contact us to arrange collection. We waited patiently and they never phoned. We had to phone them -several times only to be told their delivery/ collection service is busy ans so we are having to wait two weeks from delivery for it to be collected so it is cluttering up our house!
Will not deal with them again

I bought a Siemens dishwasher online because John Lewis offered a free five year guarantee. The dishwasher cost £435.I had to go online to John Lewis after purchase to register. This sent me to the Siemens website which was useless and would not accept the registration. I contacted Siemens on five occasions over the next six weeks to chase up my guarantee. Each time I was told it would be sent,by post and email, but I never received it. I emailed John Lewis and told them what happened and that I was getting nowhere with the guarantee registration. As John Lewis offered the guarantee on their website at time of purchase, I asked them for help. I received a short email back saying that it was nothing to do with them. I thought at least they would have contacted Siemens on my behalf. I was very surprised and will not be using the so-called trusted John Lewis name again. Nearly two months on and I have no guarantee. Siemens customer service is rubbish too

I tried to give a no star review for John Lewis but the system is insisting I mark 1 star for each category. It would have been 0 stars if I could have done it.

I ordered a Bosch washing machine online with delivery within 7 working days. I should have had a phone call to arrange delivery within 5 days so called customer service when I hadn't heard anything. I was told it could be longer than 7 days as it was a courier company and I would get the phone call to arrange delivery the following day. After two more days which took me up to day 7 for delivery I again called customer services.

Now, online my order was shown as 'despatched' which the website says means it has been sent out from the warehouse, but customer services said it would be up to another 3 weeks for delivery and when I was unhappy with that he called Bosch and they said the machine was out of stock totally. How can it be 'despatched' and yet out of stock??? And how can they expect to get away with not informing the customer of such a delay?

It's marked as 'despatched' as they can then tell you that it's too late for you to cancel the order as it's gone too far. I said that was unacceptable and they'd broken their contract with me and I was offered a goodwill £35 off if I would wait for delivery but I insisted on a refund as I had no faith left in the company. The customer service chap was as helpful as he could be but did say that they'd had lots of complaints about

First time, ordered a sofa online and credit card firm rang to confirm if purchase was authentic. After confirming it was correct, I was told to check with JohnLewis.com. Went back to my account on JohnLewis.com and the order stated it was in progress, the credit card charge had been made and there was no signs of trouble. Waited 7 days for the delivery but it failed to arrive. After over half an hour on the phone it turned out that because I had checked my account online the order was not in progress. Apparently what I should have done is call them. Why would I call a web based company? Eventually got the sofa 2 days later after more phone calls and some heated tempers. Even the customer service case worker admitted the website was misleading. Perhaps I should have called (though I communicate with normal web based companies through the web site) and since they did get it to me 2 days later I thought I would give them another go.

So ordered a dishwasher. 14 days free delivery. Told you will get a phone call to arrange a suitable date within 14 days later. 6 days later no phone call. After 90 mins of phone calls over 4 days, 4 promises to call me back I eventually get a call on day 13 to ask what the problem with the sofa is!!! The next day (day 14) I get a call saying they will deliver it on day 17 - no discussion, no arranging - just 'it will be delivered then'. When I said I need to arrange another day because I work, the guy put me on hold for 10

Attempt one - got less than half of products ordered. call up ask about other half, find out one item is missed off the list, did not know this as they did not send me an invoice telling me what items I had actually ordered! Never happened to me before. Called them told me the items never reached delivery firm, will resend 4 days later. It is now 4 days later, I call and they have booked my delivery for tomorrow! I will have to get off work early again to wait for it! Item I added to order is now coming with a seperate curior for some reason, that cannot deliver in the evening, not even sure how I am going to get this one and considering it is the xmas tree that is a bit of a worry. Who knows if the other half of the decorations will come tomorrow. I have complained and their complaints proceedure is apparently for me to send an email to a generic email address. Not sure if anything would come of it. I would never ever use them again

I ordered a gift item from JL online and paid with my JL card. The order was accepted and a confirmation received. Next day I received an email "ORDER CANCELLED" .. no reason at all was given so I replied and asked why. Apparently Account Card Services had cancelled the order. I called the number given at Account Card Services and nobody could find any record of this and they could nto help further. I went back to Customer Service who could not help further. After 6 emails and 2 phone calls I purchased something from Fortnum & Mason. So JLP a completely and utterly useless customer experience

I find shopping at John Lewis a good experience generally. The staff are always clued up on the products and very helpful. It makes a real change from part timers on high street stores.

I usually come away from JL feeling that i have been treated like a valued customer and I have peace of mind that I can reurn the goods if there's a problem or if I find them cheaper elsewhere

At present badly accessed, because of main roads through the Centre complex and distance of new store from other retail complexes. For a pedestrian, quite long walking and hair-raising road crossings. Need to liaise with site owners and council to improve environment and access.

Staff at present inexperienced and some longish delays at tills, awaiting supervisors to sort out.

Cafe pleasant but too small for expected numbers. Service slow and inexperienced (eg no saucers given to us with our cups)

Early days, but needs monitoring and a lot of improvement to bring about the excellent quality of service usually expected at JL (eg Solihull, which is really a beacon of excellence!) Would recommend to friend after improvements have come through (I am sure you will sort this out!

I purchased a brand new HP laptop (660d) from John Lewis in Bluewater because allegedly both HP & John Lewis have good reputation re reliability & customer service respectively. Not so; after only 3 months of purely average home use, the lettering on the keyboard is coming off. I don't touch type & a keyboard without letters is as much use to me as a chocolate teapot. Pleasantly & reasonably I returned it to the branch from which it was purchased only to be told it might not be repaired as they considered this to be normal wear & tear for 4 months and thus would not be covered by the warranty, nor would John Lewis repair or replace it (given my contract is with John Lewis) if HP themselves refused to do so. I have owned laptops for 20 years or so & have never had lettering coming off. I have not used chemical products to clean the keys, nor do I use hand cream. This little gem was explained by a young 'associate', rather abruptly, certainly not in the manner that I would consider to be expected of a company who pride themselves on having good customer service. The manager whom I requested to speak to also agreed that this was 'normal wear and tear' however he was certainly more professional & expressed it more politely. Are they being serious!!!?? Unbelievable! In fairness they are going to wait to see if HP are willing to repair it & they have lent me a Sony laptop meanwhile however this is not guaranteed. I am astonished and more than disa

I received the picture in about 1000 pieces, and the help from the delivery firm HDL was worse than useless and because they insisted they had tried to deliver the product the previous evening at 9.06pm, which they hadn't I was forced to phone them on a PREMIUM TELEPHONE line thus incurring an additional unnecessary cost. WHY????? The following day I returned the broken picture to the Kingston branch where the service of the staff in the picture department was exemplary , I was allowed to purchased..

    Washing Machine
did not turn up on named date. Had taken day off work to recieve it
Driver rang at 8 in evening to say it wouldn't be delivered. I said that was not acceptable. He then said would deliver....and didn't.
    Customer services
then said would not deliver for another week...i said would cancel order
so they then said it would come special courier that day....still waiting

I have shopped at John Lewis for over 30 years and have always been happy with the product and service but now I have no intention of ever buying furniture from them again. Nor would I recommend their furniture to anyone else. I tried to purchase a Monterey dressing table back in May of this year and in total had five delivered. All were either not put together properly or were damaged. In the end I gave up and had a refund. Customer service made me feel that I was being too fussy and that I should be happy to accept items in less than perfect condition. I tried to say that I thought that there was a quality control problem as the furniture was well packaged and I believe damaged and not checked for being put together properly before leaving the manufacturing warehouse but no one really cares. I thought I would give them another try, thinking that the same fiasco could not happen again but I was wrong. Having just ordered a Maharani 5 drawer chest, I had to laugh otherwise I would have cried when the delivery guys said they had unwrapped the chest and that the bottom was falling off. They took that away and I was told customer service would phone me. When I did not hear anything I called them by phone and email explaining what had happened. I then got an email giving me a returns number for collection of the first chest and that a second chest would be delivered at the same time. I phoned and emailed again to say that I did not have the first chest and was assured th

I bought a John Lewis TK17BCJLU Kettle from johnlewis.com - I had it less than two months when it started switching off before the water was boiled.

I took it back to their Newcastle upon Tyne branch. The assistant went to see a manager, she said when she came back, "the trouble is limescale build-up". I looked inside and there was a very thin line of limescale about an 1.5 inches long. The assistant also said "The kettle guarentee does not cover it for limesale build-up" and "The manufacturer will not take back any more of these kettles". She told me to descale the kettle.

I descaled the kettle and it still switched off. I took it back to the Newcastle branch where a manager said "The limescale gets into the switch."

I live alone and I'm at work four days a week - the kettle was only seven weeks old - I refill the kettle with fresh water every use.

This kettle is not fit for use if it can't handle such a small amount of limescale, plus, if the manager is right when she said "The limescale gets into the switch." this kettle is dangerous.

Wanting to buy a new Sat Nav and knowing the exact one I wanted, John Lewis offered the best price I had seen. Went to the store and waited...and waited...and waited for an assistant to come out of hiding. Eventually someone walked by and I did the usual 'Excuse me, I'd like to...' 'Sorry, this is not my department, I'm just putting something back. You'll have to wait for one of those 2 there as we're very short staffed today.'

    Well, he did say sorry!

Oh yeah, the suns out...say no more.

Waited around for about 15 mins further for an assistant to be free, explained what I wanted and was told thre's none left and they don't make them anymore. Was offered 10% off the ticket price for the display unit, which was nice, but unfortunately I know how hard the screen had been pressed and probably would have felt ripped off if I'd only paid a tenner for it!

I'm glad you didn't try to upsell me anything cos I'd have probably bought it. Thankyou!

Bought a laptop from John Lewis, it packed up after a week. It just sat on my desk, I hadn't moved it yet. Under their policy, they claim to give you a return in such a scenario.
